Shade when you need it. Sky when you don't.

Arizona outdoor living is a balance. The same patio that is unbearable at 4pm in July is the best room in the house at sunset in November. A retractable awning is the most flexible way to manage that swing, because it is not a permanent roof. Extend it for the west-facing afternoon sun, then retract it for winter light, clear desert nights and the view you bought the house for.

Because the fabric sits outside the glass, an awning also intercepts solar gain before it reaches windows and walls. That can make the patio more comfortable and reduce the load on the rooms behind it. Actual energy savings depend on the home, orientation, insulation and how the system is used, so we do not promise a specific percentage.

Where a retractable awning fits in Arizona

  • Patios and pool decks that need shade for part of the day without losing the open sky.
  • West- and south-facing windows where low afternoon sun drives heat and glare into the house.
  • Restaurant and retail patios that need flexible coverage for customers and storefronts.
  • Rentals and HOA homes where a permanent structure is difficult to approve or not allowed.

What makes an awning desert-ready

  • A powder-coated aluminum frame that resists heat, dust and corrosion.
  • Solution-dyed acrylic fabric that holds colour under intense UV.
  • Tensioned arms and proper anchoring for your mounting surface.
  • A motor and wind sensor so the awning retracts when gusts build.
  • A simple rule everyone understands: retract it before a monsoon storm.

Arizona awning checklist

Before your consultation, note the patio's direction, the mounting surface, how much wind you get and whether your HOA has design rules. It makes the first visit more productive.

Materials and control

Engineered for sun, not just styled for it.

QIP awnings are designed in Italy and hand-assembled in the USA to your measurements. You choose the fabric, frame colour and control.

High-UV fabrics

Solution-dyed acrylic options from QIP's material partners, including Sunbrella, Mermet, Recasens and Serge Ferrari.

Monsoon-aware control

Retract before a storm, or add a Somfy wind sensor so the awning closes automatically when gusts rise.

Motorized or manual

Remote, wall switch or smart-home control. Manual arms remain a simple, budget-friendly option for smaller openings.

Made to your opening

No boxed sizes. Every frame and fabric panel is cut for your patio, window or storefront.

15-year warranty

QIP backs its product line with a 15-year warranty. Written coverage for your exact system comes with your quote.

Dealer installation

Measured and installed by QIP's authorized Arizona dealer network, with one point of contact from quote to walkthrough.

Three awning builds, one custom fit.

QIP's retractable awning family comes in three housing styles. The right one depends on how much protection you want for the fabric when it is retracted, and how the awning meets your wall or soffit.

Square Box

A fully enclosed cassette with clean, architectural lines. The fabric and arms are protected inside the housing when retracted, which suits exposed Arizona patios and modern stucco elevations.

Round Box

A curved cassette with a softer profile. It offers the same enclosed protection with a more traditional silhouette for Mediterranean, Spanish Revival and territorial-style homes.

Open Roll

The fabric rolls onto an exposed tube. It is the simplest build and often the most economical, and it works well under a soffit or covered patio where the roll is already protected.

Made to order, not from a box. QIP does not inventory finished awnings. Your size, fabric, frame colour and control are built for your project, which is why the measure and written specification matter.

Window awnings and door awnings use the same custom approach at a smaller scale. For commercial patios, QIP can specify wider units and multiple bays so the shade line reads as one continuous element.

Manual or motorized?

Motorized is usually the better long-term fit for large, high or hard-to-reach awnings. Manual is simpler and more budget-friendly for smaller windows and doors. Your dealer can demonstrate both.

From measurement to first afternoon in the shade.

Every Arizona project starts with the same questions: which direction does the patio face, what is the wall made of, how much wind does the site get, and how do you want to use the space? The answers determine the frame, fabric, mounting and control.

  1. Free consultation. We confirm the exposure, mounting, HOA requirements and the right product for the space.
  2. Measure and design. You choose the fabric, frame colour and manual or motorized operation.
  3. Manufacturing. Your awning is built to order. Lead times vary by product, size and finish, and we confirm your production window before you order.
  4. Professional installation. The local dealer installs and walks you through operation and care. Many residential installations are completed in a day or two once the product arrives.

How much does a retractable awning cost in Arizona?

Every awning is custom, so price depends on width, projection, fabric, housing style, mounting and motorization. A free on-site consultation is the only way to get an accurate number. We provide a written, itemized quote before you commit, with no obligation.

Can a retractable awning survive Arizona monsoon wind?

Yes, when it is specified, anchored and operated correctly. Awnings should be retracted during high wind. A Somfy wind sensor can close the awning automatically when gusts rise. No fabric awning should be left extended through a monsoon storm.

Do I need HOA approval for an awning in Arizona?

Most Arizona HOAs require architectural review for awnings and shade structures. Arizona law now limits blanket bans on qualifying backyard shade structures, but associations may still set reasonable rules on size, placement and appearance. Check your CC&Rs and get written approval before installation. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is the difference between Square Box, Round Box and Open Roll?

Square Box and Round Box are enclosed cassettes that protect the fabric and arms when retracted; the difference is the profile. Open Roll leaves the fabric rolled on an exposed tube, which is simpler and often more economical, especially under a soffit.

Can you mount an awning to stucco or block?

Usually, but the method matters. The dealer assesses the wall structure and uses the appropriate anchors, backing or brackets for stucco, masonry, fascia or wood. Proper attachment is part of the site survey, not an afterthought.

How long does a custom awning take?

Lead times vary by product, size and finish because every unit is made to order. We confirm your production and installation window before you order. Many residential installations are completed in a day or two once the product arrives.

Will an awning lower my energy bill?

Exterior shade reduces direct solar gain on windows and walls, which can make the patio and adjacent rooms more comfortable and ease cooling demand. Actual savings depend on your home, orientation, windows, insulation and usage. We do not promise a specific percentage.
